On September 23, 2009 The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance sponsored the Inaugural Interdisciplinary Clinical Case Competition. The fourth and final round of the case competition was held before a crowd of over 200 at Meharry Medical College. Vanderbilt School of Medicine faculty member, Terrence S. Dermody, moderated the event while a jury of faculty from all disciplines included in the competition watched from front row seats. While the event was comprised primarily of Meharry (Medicine, Dentistry, and Public Health) and Vanderbilt programs (Medicine, Law, Dietetic Internship, Nursing), two programs (Pharmacy and Master of Social Work) were from the University of Tennessee. In addition, the planning team partnered with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, Metro Health Department, and Vanderbilt’s Center of Excellence for Children in Custody.
Each of the three excellent interdisciplinary student teams presented its case summation in thirty minutes (Round IV) for 25% of its overall score. Each team picked a unique name to identify itself: Red Light Special, Mankato, and LiveStrong. At the end of the evening, the Mankato team was announced the First Place Winner. Congratulations to Mankato! The team was made up of Aisha Woods (Meharry Dental Student), Kristen Pardue (Vanderbilt Dietetic Internship Program), Jason Sexton (Vanderbilt School of Law), LaKisha Garduna (Meharry School of Medicine), Irving Ye (Vanderbilt School of Medicine), Choloe Kiritz (Vanderbilt School of Nursing), Kendall Grizzard (University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy), Claudine Brown (Meharry MSPH Program), and Laura Catherine Wilson (University of Tennessee College of Social Work).

Special thanks were extended to Lisa Rawn from the Vanderbilt Center for Experiential Learning, Mary Beth Franklyn from the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, and two wonderful standardized patients who were trained to become the patient JJ, the heart of the case.

Another twenty-five percent of the total score was determined by the simulated patient interview (Round III) which was accomplished at Vanderbilt’s Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment under the direction of Lisa Rawn on September 16, 2009. This event also included each team’s preparation of the final patient discharge summary. The discharge summary was another 25% of the overall team score. The interview and team deliberations were videotaped to facilitate scoring by the faculty jury.
