Steven
C. Stain, M.D. is Professor and Chair of the Department
of Surgery at Meharry Medical College (tenured), and Professor of
Surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville,
Tennessee. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in Fresno,
California. He received his B.S. degree (Biology-1979) and M.D (1983)
from the University of California at Irvine. He served his internship
and residency in general surgery at the Los Angeles County –
University of Southern California Medical Center (1983-1988). Dr.
Stain completed fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care (Los
Angeles – County University of Southern California Medical
Center, 1989), Hepatobiliary Surgery (University of Berne, Switzerland,
1991), and Health Service Research (American Association of Medical
Colleges, 1993). His first faculty appointment was as a clinical
instructor at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine
in 1988, where he was as a faculty member in the Department of Surgery.
At the time of his relocation to Nashville, he was a tenured Associate
Professor. Currently, he is Chief of Surgery at the Nashville General
Hospital, where he directs the surgical residency program as an
affiliate site for the Vanderbilt University surgical residency
program.
He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in Surgery (1989,
1998), and Surgical Critical Care (1991, 1999). Dr. Stain is a
fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is an active member
of several surgical societies, including the American Surgical
Association, Southern Surgical Association, Society of University
Surgeons, Western Surgical Association, Pacific Coast Surgical
Association, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons
(SAGES), Society of Surgical Oncology and Society for Surgery
of the Alimentary Tract. He has served in leadership roles in
many societies, including Treasurer of the Society of Black Academic
Surgeons, SAGES Board of Governors, Chair of the Surgical Section
of the Southern Medical Association, Program Committee Chair of
the Western Surgical Association. In 2002, he was elected as a
Director of the American Board of Surgery.
His clinical and research interests are in hepatobiliary and
pancreatic surgery, oncology and health services research. He
directs the clinical oncology program of the National Cancer Institute
funded Meharry/Vanderbilt U54 Cancer Partnership Grant, of which
he is the Co-Principal Investigator. He is Principal Investigator
of a NCI funded R-25 education grant Student Research: Stimulus
to Academic Careers, and a VA HBCU partnership grant Liver-Lung
Interaction during Acute Pancreatitis. His recent funding includes
being a co-investigator on the Meharry/Vanderbilt Patient Safety
Center Grant (AHRQ), and Tennessee State University/Meharry Medical
College Collaborative Minority Healthcare and Quality Research
(AHRQ). He has written over 70 peer reviewed publications, is
on the editorial board of Current Surgery, and serves as ad hoc
reviewer for several other journals.
