MVA holds Walking Wednesday

The importance of physical fitness, doctors say, cannot be emphasized enough. Physical activity is essential to prevent and reduce the risks of many diseases and improve physical and mental health.

With that in mind, the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance once again kicked off Walking Wednesday, a campus- and community-wide wellness program, last week. Walkers met at the Alliance office on 1999 Meharry Blvd. at noon and followed pre-planned routes around the surrounding campuses.

The Alliance’s Executive Director, Dr. Consuelo H. Wilkins, MD, MSCI, called the program a great way to promote and encourage wellness among staff, students and the community. “We’re thrilled to once again start Walking Wednesdays,” she said, “and we’re thrilled to help advocate the importance of physical fitness.”

The event’s inaugural walk saw participants from the Alliance, neighboring campuses and community.

Kimberly Avant, Program Coordinator for the Alliance and an active walker, commented, “I’m off to a better start this season! I’m taking my health and well-being more seriously – and it’s good to get fresh air during the workday.”

Alliance Communications Coordinator Matt Schorr agreed: “It’s especially nice to get out of the office for a walk on a pleasant day.”

The MVA is also holding Moving Monday to further promote physical activity. It will continue both fitness events each week – with the exception of Memorial Day – until June 3.
