The program's recent culmination saw teams of diverse health students present powerful community projects, marking a milestone in this groundbreaking initiative.

Bridging Education and Community Action

"Our IPE program is built on the idea that breaking down silos in healthcare education translates to improved health outcomes for marginalized populations," explains Dr. Christian Ketel, co-director of the IPE program. "Students from different disciplines learn together, then apply their combined knowledge to real-world problems alongside community partners."

This model fosters innovative solutions. Projects have ranged from wellness initiatives for vulnerable groups to increasing healthcare access for differently-abled communities, and even tackling complex policy challenges around re-entry for formerly incarcerated people.

Fostering Collaborative Leaders

The MVA seeks students from backgrounds as diverse as their projects – nursing, medicine, social work, public health, therapy fields, and more. "We want passionate students from Nashville institutions who are ready to challenge their own biases, collaborate across professions, and contribute creatively to community solutions.," says Dr. Ketel.

Megan Neiman, an occupational therapy student and recent IPE Alum, reflects on the impact of this immersive approach: "The program doesn't just cultivate better practitioners; it shapes health students to be better members of our society. We learn to care for whole communities, not just symptoms. I would absolutely recommend IPE to other health students!"

The Heart of the MVA Mission

"IPE is core to what we do at the MVA," says IPE program manager Mercedes Ridinger. "We bring together future healthcare professionals and put them in the heart of communities. They discover the power of close collaboration to drive lasting change in community health."

Want to see more?

Visit the MVA IPE web page for inspiring project summaries!

Read about new IPE faculty advisor Amy Rasmussen, PhD, from Belmont University

Check out our IPE community partner spotlight about Special Olympics Tennessee

-----------------------------------------

The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) is a 20+year partnership between Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University Medical Center that serves to advance the shared interests of our institutions and community partners. At the core of this program is the belief, as articulated by Pam Cowley, Public Health Manager at the Vanderbilt Memory and Alzheimer's Center, that "spirituality has been shown to positively affect feelings of hope, self-esteem, cognition, maintaining physical functioning longer and handling adversity." Cowley underlines the holistic approach needed in addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by Alzheimer's disease.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Fayron Epps, and her interdisciplinary team have taken a groundbreaking step by collaborating with African American faith communities to equip families facing Alzheimer's with essential tools and supportive resources. Ethan Crews, Manager at the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA), a co-sponsor of the event, said, “this initiative not only recognizes the unique challenges patients and their families face, but also leverages the strength and resilience inherent in their spiritual practices.” Crews went on to say that, "the feedback from participants at the event was a testament to the universal impact of Alzheimer's - touching individuals, families, and broader social networks, while underscoring the heavy burden shouldered by caregivers."

The partnership between the Vanderbilt Memory & Alzheimer's Center, its Community Advisory Board, and the involvement of the MVA in the Finding God in Alzheimer's conference exemplifies how community and academia are powerful allies who can help caregivers and patients. By bringing together community-informed resources and educational events, this initiative stands as a testament to the commitment to eliminating health disparities. The success of such programs highlights the importance of fostering capacity building within communities, ensuring that support is not only available but also accessible to those who need it the most.

The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) is a 20+year partnership between Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University Medical Center that serves to advance the shared interests of our institutions and community partners. His pioneering work underscores the critical role of public policy in bridging the chasm of health inequity that plagues our society.

Health equity is not just a lofty ideal but a tangible goal that, when achieved, promises a healthier, more vibrant society for all. Carpenter's research vividly illustrates how public policy can serve as a powerful lever in promoting healthy behaviors, preventing illness, and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status, has equal access to health services. From his exploration of the impacts of public health policies on risky and preventive health behaviors to his groundbreaking studies on LGBTQ+ issues in economics and demography, Carpenter’s work is a testament to the profound influence of informed, compassionate policymaking on public health.

Public policy, when crafted with insight and empathy, can transform lives. Moderated by Dr. Leah Alexander, the conversation encompassed a broad range of topics. Robust discussion included the potential of multi-disciplinary collaboration and preventative medicine, the value of an MPH degree for a career in health equity, the political economy of Cuba's health system, the impact of racial disparities on health, as well as current initiatives at NIMHD.

Graduate students from Dr. Alexander's MPH seminar asked Dr. Pèrez-Stable to elaborate on how he engaged with community during his early years as a clinician. Notably, he explained his reasons for living in the same community as the patients he treated while practicing in San Francisco. The NIMHD Director highlighted the significance of building strong connections within patient communities. He underscored that when physicians and health advocates live in proximity to the communities they serve, providers tend to develop deeper compassion for and awareness of patient struggles. It becomes possible to close disparate gaps in health and wellbeing by providing much-needed nuanced care to patients and their loved ones. Additionally, Dr. Pèrez-Stable underscored the need for physician visibility in marginalized communities now, more than ever to re-establish trust and lay a foundation of mutual respect. Both mutual trust and respect are necessary to dispel misinformation that runs contrary to the wellbeing and safety of patient communities. The Director spoke briefly about the challenges NIMHD faces to combat misinformation about COVID in particular and the vital role that physicians play in health education.

Dr. Pèrez-Stable spent a generous couple of hours with the attendees affirming the creative interventions and competencies unique to faculty and students at MMC. Students and faculty were able to engage with him extensively in one-on-one talks following the group discussion.

------------

The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) is a 20+year partnership between Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University Medical Center that serves to advance the shared interests of our institutions and community partners. The team advanced holistic care and helped patients navigate complex lives, addressing issues like feeding their pets or working on relationship issues, especially for people facing end-of-life concerns. The high impact patient engagement at the clinic showed Dr. Rasmussen the true value of healing the whole individual by working with the patient’s own ecosystem. I realized I was good at chemistry and that opened the doors to my next step: college. I had no aspiration to go to college; I am the first in my maternal family to go and complete college. One college course required us to perform a genealogy chart to understand our family’s health history—and this project opened my eyes to factors that I was predisposed to and how important it was for people like me to be in the health sector.”

How has being a native Tennessean played a role in your approach to your work?

“It has definitely played a role in understanding the communities that I work with. For example, faith and faith-based communities were a large part of my upbringing. Both of my grandfathers were pastors and I have been in the same church all my life—and that type of community, faith-based communities, are a big part of my experience as a Tennessean. Growing up, the whole community, the whole village took care of me— “it takes a village” is really how I was raised…my village was not only my neighborhood but also my church family. Understanding this first-hand has been vital to my approach to my work.”

Tell us about your journey to the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance:

“Well, it definitely has not been linear! I’ve had the opportunity to work with some great organizations like MTSU’s Center for Health and Human Services, the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program with the Tennessee Department of Health, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Department of Biomedical Informatics. Each of these positions taught me different lessons, but all pointing me in the direction of listening to the voices that are on the ‘outside looking in’…something I feel very strongly about. Which brought me here, to the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance…continuing to elevate the voices that traditionally haven’t been listened to…”

What excites you about the work at the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance?

“Talking and working with the community. Making sure they feel valued and feel like they have been listened to. From talking to a faculty member about a consultation request—helping them get their work done or helping move their research forward—to working with students that may feel lost or don’t know where to start. That is what excites me. My thing is helping people. Whether it be with their health or helping them move a health problem forward or helping them arrive to a solution—that’s what I want to do. I want to help people.”

What things do you like to do outside of work?

I love to sing. At the end of the day, MVSA taught me communication skills with students and faculty at other schools as well as staying connected with Meharry graduates who are working at VUMC. This was invaluable for me when I needed guidance moving forward. I highly recommend the MVSA for both medical and dental students. How often do medical students get to interact with medical students from other schools? It only makes sense that we get to know each other and work with each other. MVSA is one of the organizations that facilitate collaboration between medical students.

What wisdom can you share with folks dreaming of careers in the medical sciences?

It seems, at least at first, that it’s a long hard journey but remember that anything in life worth doing will have setbacks and hurdles.
