Meharry announces leadership appointments

NAHSVILLE, Tenn. Meharry Medical College announced two new members to its leadership team last week: Peter Edmund Millet, Ph.D., HSP, who will serve as Executive Vice President, and Patrick Harold Johnson, who will serve as Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

James, E.K. Hildreth, Ph.D., M.D., President and CEO of Meharry Medical College, said in the announcement both Millet and Johnson have long been closely linked with Meharry and bring a wealth of knowledge, leadership and expertise in health care and higher education.

"Their contributions and commitment to service will be invaluable as we continue to fulfill the mission of our great institution and the vision we have set for its growth," he said.

 

Peter Edmund Millet, Ph.D., HSP, Executive Vice President

As Executive Vice President, Dr. Millet will provide strategic vision and leadership to help Meharry build upon its mission of improving the health of underserved communities. He will be responsible for defining and pursuing institutional priorities and for the oversight and development of the quality and operations of units assigned by the President.  In addition, Dr. Millet will develop and lead the implementation of innovative and collaborative solutions in the operations of the College with a critical focus on technology, systems, and policy improvement and effective business models.

Dr. Millet comes to Meharry from Stillman College, where he served as President. Prior to this position, he served as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the same prestigious college. From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Millet served as Dean of College of Education at Tennessee State University, where he also was the Chairman of the Department of Psychology. At TSU, Dr. Millet and his team were recipients of nearly $20 million in external funding from agencies such as the National Institutes for Health and the State of Tennessee. In addition, he has received extensive leadership training from Harvard University, the Millennium Leadership Institute (MLI), the Hampton University Executive Leadership Summit, and the Council of Independent Colleges - Presidents Leadership Institute. 

Dr. Millet received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Oakland University. He completed his residency at the Medical College of Georgia and an internship at the Elam Mental Health Center here at Meharry.

 

Mr. Patrick Harold Johnson, Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement

As Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Johnson will be work closely with me to fulfill our vision for the college by building sustainable philanthropic partnerships that will fund academic program development, expand student scholarships, increase opportunities for faculty development, and support infrastructure improvements and expansion. In addition, Mr. Johnson will serve on the Executive Leadership Council (ELC) and will collaborate with Meharry’s leadership team to develop and implement a new strategic fundraising plan.

Mr. Johnson comes to us from Campbell & Company where he served as a senior consultant and provided counsel for health care and higher education clients during times of transition. However, he is not new to Meharry.

From 2007-12, Mr. Johnson served as our Senior Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement and helped cement relationships with major corporations and foundations, including Amgen, Wal-Mart, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the Cal Turner Family Foundation, The Kresge Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He also built the development infrastructure for a $200 million comprehensive initiative that supported clinical programs, training and community engagement affiliations with a range of nonprofit, private and government health care organizations. Additionally, he was a member of Meharry Senior Management Counsel, where he worked closely with the schools of medicine, dentistry, and graduate studies. 

Before coming to Meharry in 2007, Mr. Johnson was the former regional director of development for the University of Tennessee system, which included the Knoxville, Martin, Chattanooga, Memphis and Tullahoma campuses. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fisk University and completed the mini MBA program at Belmont University.

Founded in 1999, the Alliance bridges the institutions of Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Its mission is to enrich learning and advance clinical research in three primary areas -- community engagement, interprofessional education and research -- by developing and supporting mutually beneficial partnerships between Meharry Medical College, Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the communities they serve. Through community engagement, the Alliance serves a large community of stakeholders including surrounding universities and colleges, community organizations, faith-based outlets and community health centers. Its interprofessional education enhances students' interdisciplinary understanding and improves patient outcomes through integrated care. The research conducted provides access to experienced grant writers and materials supporting the grant application process and facilitates grant-writing workshops.
